My watch is recording that I am asleep (deep sleep) when I am actually awake and texting other people.

@Jenbjo , A warm welcome to the Community! Thank you for your message. 

All wrist-based Fitbit devices automatically detect your sleep when you wear your device to bed. 

When your body is completely at rest and you haven’t moved for about an hour, your Fitbit device records that you’re asleep.

Try wearing the Charge 4 a bit looser?
