Without REM sleep and Deep sleep data on the Sleep Page, the Sleep Page is pretty much useless.

@Al_1   Since you sync with your iPhone, you should look at the sleep details in the app.  If you can see the inconsistent heart rate message, then the cleaning/wrist placement interventions might help.

I was surprised when you said that you were syncing with Fitbit Connect on Mac OS Catalina.  There is a long thread where users say that they cannot sync with OS Catalina.  If you had a magic answer, that would help a lot of users.

I am also moving this whole thread to the Charge 2 forum.  Sleep stages are a device issue, not an app issue.

Hi @Al_1. Welcome to the Community Forums.

Thanks for letting me know that your Sleep Stages weren't recorded. I understand how helpful this information is for you and let me help you with this matter. As you may know there are some factors that may prevent your Fitbit device from generating sleep stages. For that reason, please make sure of the following:

  • If you slept in a position that prevented your device from getting a consistent heart-rate reading or wore it too loosely.
  • If you used the Begin Sleep Now option in the Fitbit app instead of simply wearing your device to bed.
  • If you slept for less than 3 hours.
  • If your device’s battery is critically low.

After taking those conditions into consideration, let me suggest to restart your Fitbit, wear it on your wrist as described here, verify if you're getting heart rate readings and test it for the next nights.

Let me know how it goes.

Please read my post carefully. I did not say that Sleep Stages are not being recorded. They are.

But they are only showing Awake, Restless and Asleep. They are missing REM sleep and Deep Sleep, which used to be there.

Why are REM Sleep and Deep Sleep now missing from the Sleep page?

The moderator's edit of my subject "for clarity" is incorrect and misleading. Please return to original subject: Why are REM Sleep and Deep Sleep are missing from Sleep Stages?

@Al_1   Can you please clarify something?  Are you saying that for a night's sleep, you got a sleep score, but then Sleep Patterns, not Sleep Stages?  Can you post a screenshot that shows this?  Seeing what you see might help.

This Help article, What should I know about sleep stages? , shows an image near the end that is available any time a user gets Sleep Patterns instead of Sleep Stages.  Does this show up on your screen?

Also, what model tracker are you using?

Thank you for your quick response.

Yes, as of a few days ago I am only getting Sleep Patterns, not Sleep Stages (see below).

This is what I always used to get, up until a few days ago:

I am NOT getting the image you mention below, about "Why did I get Simplified...":

Screen Shot 2020-03-15 at 10.29.07 AM.jpg

I am using a Charge 2 and Mac OS Catalina for Log/Dashboard.

I have always simply wore my Charge 2 to bed, and know nothing about the "Begin Sleep Now" option.

I am not familiar with a Sleep Score, and have never seen it.

Any ideas would be most appreciated, since I really rely on Sleep Stages, NOT Sleep Patterns.

Thank you,

Al

@Al_1   Thank you for your screenshots.  They help a lot.  The vast majority of Fitbit users sync with a smartphone on the Fitbit app and overlook the users that sync with a Mac using Fitbit Connect.  You posted your question in the iOS phone app forum, so I hope you understand why we needed more information.  (No harm, no foul.)

First, your web view doesn't give a sleep score.  That is part of the phone app only. So that answers that. Second, your third screenshot is also from the phone app.  That is why everything looks so different.  There are times when all users will get sleep patterns when we expect sleep stages.  Although you can't get the information from the web view, the most common reason is that your Charge 2 couldn't get a consistent heart rate trace.  My husband wears a Blaze and gets sleep patterns at least once a week and he gets that explanation.  Your Fitbit needs a consistent heart rate because it uses heart rate variability to determine sleep stages.  Third, the Begin Sleep Now is also part of the phone app.  Again, it doesn't apply to you.

Although it's not listed in the Help article I linked, some of us recommend restarting your Charge 2 once or twice and see if that helps.  I also clean the back of my Versa 2 with a microfiber cloth that is damp, not wet, with alcohol.  That will clean the LED emitters and the sensor.  Also, try changing the position of your Charge 2 on your wrist.  This is described in the Help article.

I hope this helps.

Laurie,

Thank you for all your good ideas and information.

BTW, even though I use my Mac for Log/Dashboard, I actually use my iPhone to sync because my Fitbit Connect stopped working (asking for Bluetooth to be on, even though it is on - a whole other problem).

But I don't think that syncing with my iPhone is causing the problem because my Sleep Stages were showing up just fine when syncing with my iPhone before.

I will try some of your suggestions and will update this post when appropriate.

Thanks again,

Al

Thank you for all your help with this issue, Laurie.

Yes, I do see inconsistent heart rate message on my iPhone. I will follow those instructions.

I was only syncing on Mac OS before Catalina, so I have no magic answer unfortunately.

Thanks again,

Al

Last night before going to sleep I cleaned the sensors on the back of my Charge 2.

This morning I got a report showing ALL my Sleep Stages, for the first time in many days.

I will keep posting results whenever appropriate.

Thanks to all who have helped me on this issue.

Tried all you suggested. Still no sleep stages. What once worked simply doesn't work any longer.Thank you for your suggestions. At this point I will blame it on an irregular heartbeat which I believe I have.  RC
