Step count makes no sense (it has reduced, for a start)

I did a half marathon today.  Looking at the activity on my dashboard, it knows I did 21km, but it thinks I somehow did that in only 3,466 steps ("+3,466 of 11,420 steps taken")!  Shortly after the activity (and after I'd saved the activity on my Garmin Forerunner 235, which I'm fairly sure must be counting steps), my step count was, I'm certain, over 27,000 steps, but now I look and it's 11,420.  How is this possible??  Any ideas why my step count has gone down, and how to correct it?  I've seen that I can add an activity manually, but I'm concerned that (a) there doesn't seem to be a way of saying what the step count should be, and (b) it's not clear what happens if I make that activity overlap with my half marathon.  Can I not simply edit the run and correct the step count?  I know from the Garmin app what my time was and what my average cadence (i.e., steps per minute) was, so I can get a pretty good estimate of the step count.  It's certainly not 3,466 though!

Hi there @rmwiseman. It's good to see you here in the Community.

I understand how you feel about this situation. I'd recommend you check these articles, How accurate are Fitbit devices?, How does my Fitbit device calculate my daily activity? and How do I add, edit, or delete Fitbit data and activities?.

Also you can try to restart your device by following these steps.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply @LucioFitbit.  Unfortunately, those articles didn't help. Up till then and indeed since then, it has always got the step count about right. This morning's 10k, for example, seems to have counted the right magnitude of steps. So it was just that run. I don't understand how it can think that I did so few steps for that distance! Each step would have to be a decent long-jump distance for that to work!

Thanks, I'm glad it's working OK now too, but I'd still like to correct the run where it was so very wrong!

Thanks, but that's one you shared before. It doesn't say how to edit the step count, only how to remove it.

Hi there @rmwiseman, it's great to have you in the Community.

I appreciate the information shared. I'd recommend you add an activity with the steps missing to compensate the step count, by following the steps provided in the same article.

Hope this helps.
