Why does the dashboard record kms for certain walks and not for others.

I have noticed that when an activity is automatically considered as a walk than it only records time and steps but not distance.  For some reason unknown to me the dashboard sometimes recognises a walk as a hike and then I do get a distance.  How is that?

If you use the manual method where you start and stop your walk recording, distance is one of the stats. I found relying on automatic detection for exercises was too flaky for me.  Manually invoking works fine.
