Why my steps are not the same than my friend if we walk the same route?

My friend and I both have fit but charge devices. We walk together regularly yet our step counts are very different. Why is this?

The one who has longer legs will have less steps for the same distance. Also, the default stride set by Fitbit is based on a combination of sex, age and height. You may have different strides.

I've had the same. A friend and i where away. The approximately got 2000 steps more than me a day. They are taller than me. When looking in settings there stride is bigger. So theoretically mine should have been higher. There distance was even higher. We practically walked the same distance all week.
