Hi there, I am charging my fit bit for the first time... should the battery symbol remain on the screen... when I connect it flashes then disappears... How do I know it's actually charging?

It takes at least 2 to 3 hours to charge for the first time. After that you can set it up

Still didn’t answer the question about the display. I have had mine plugged in all night and it hasn’t charged at all

Then I would return it where ever it was bought. Sounds defective
