@shannmartinez A warm welcome to the Community! One reason why your friend may disappeared is because he hasn't been active during the past days and now he will show in the inactive friends. In order to see them go to the Dashboard > click on the friend's tile > click on see all > while seeing your friends you're going to see "show all friends".
