iOS fitbit app not displaying BPM just for exercise period

I wear my Charge 3 only when I exercise to monitor my heart rate for interval training. Previously, when I was done, I would sync it with my iPhone and could view the saw-tooth pattern including the value of the highest rate. After what looks to be an "upgrade" for the app, it now displays only my BPM for the 24-hour period, so there's a single peak during my run, but no detail. Is there a way to fix this.  Thanks for any help.

By "manual", I mean selecting the excercise start on the fitbit explicitely, requiring me to start and then stop when complete.   It is in the main interface, not in settings.   I don't know how best to describe it.  In my case (charge 5), I have tennis as one of my exercises.   I swipe left twice to reach the list of exercises available.  I greatly prefer auto-detect.

Fwiw - I'm also noticing dramatic differences between calorie count, heart rate - when manually selecting an exercise - vs auto detect.  My average heart rate, calories, and time in peak zone are all higher in manually selected exercise mode.  I'm now very confused and suspicious...   Perhaps the granularity of data is GREATER in manually selected exercise?  Given that tennis is start/stop - maybe it catches my peak heart rate instances more accurately?

Thanks! I have a Charge 3 so it may work differently. Under settings, activities, I can find run, and under that auto-recognize. I'll try turning it off and see if I can manually start it.
