I have an Alta and my friends have various Fitbit models. Nobody can read the time or anything else while outside, especially in the sun. Golf watches can easily be read. The solution to this is not in the back light. Fitbit needs an old fashioned display.

@Jgolfer or a very new fashioned one! Unfortunately the issue you have reported is common with with some Fitbits, especially the Alta - the battery life is excellent, but the display can be difficult to read in bright sunlight. Older technologies (such as used in Fitbit Surge) meant that the display was easier to rad in vey bright conditions, but battery life suffered,
The newest Fitbit, the Versa 2, has a display that can easily be read even in very bright conditions. Technology moves on, and sometimes these problems get solved.
Sorry, I appreciate that this does not help your issue. I was smply addressing your comment re old fashioned vs new technology.
