I think you hit the side button to stop it.

I tried pushing the side button like it said but I can’t get mine off. Did yours work?

No it didn't work at first. Eventually the screen tells you to push the side button to finish. It's really frustrating, I've started the stopwatch 4 or 5 times since I got the inspire. I can eventually get it shut off but there has to be a better answer to the problem. Good luck.
