Fitbit inspire not recording exercise

Advice please...my new Fitbit Inspire does not record workouts automatically which is very frustrating. I've done all the troubleshooting suggested. Should it do this itself or should I be asking it to? Should I be able to start an exercise on my wrist tracker or does it not have this function?

Please advise as I think it's rubbish

It's so frustrating. Mind told me I did a swim on Thursday! I did 45 mins
today and it told me I did 7.

I do 90 mins a day on the eleptical  7 days a week.  It tells me I've done 1 day of 15 mins walking. Does anybody monitor these forums? How do you shoot for goals when the watch works against you.
