What is the green flashing light on the back of the device and why does it never turn off/what is it’s purpose? How do I turn it off?

The green flashing light is what measures your heart rate. You can read about how this works in the following help file: https://help.fitbit.com/articles/en_US/Help_article/1565/

 

Note that it will flash whenever you are wearing your fitbit. Even if you turn off heart rate tracking in the settings, the light will still flash.
