Inspire 2 stops tracking sleep in the middle of my sleep

Replies are disabled for this topic. Start a new one or visit our Help Center.

The Inspire 2 I got for Christmas was tracking my sleep fine for 8 days, and I appreciated the sleep score from my premium membership. But the last 2 nights it has just stopped at 1:05am and 1:50am respectively, even though I was fast asleep at those times. It's showing that I only slept from 11:36pm to 1:05am one night, and 10:57pm to 1:50am the next night, when both nights I slept until about 6am. No sleep details because it was "less than 3 hours" each night. What would cause it to just stop tracking asleep and assume I had gotten up even though I was still asleep? I've checked, and DND was NOT turned on.

Hi, @WendyRobin, welcome, you may find these articles of use How do I track my sleep with my Fitbit device? and What's sleep score in the Fitbit app? As an experienced "Fitbit" user you know that the sleep data is built on the HR data stream and movement sensors. I wonder if you've changed the way you wear your Inspire 2, you are probably familiar with this -

Don't Wear It Too Tight

  • Make sure your band isn’t too tight. Wear the band loosely enough that it can move back and forth on your wrist. During exercise, try moving the band higher on your wrist (2-3 finger-widths above your wrist bone) to get a better fit so it’s secure, but not too tight. Our heart rate sensors work best when they maintain contact with your skin. Lower the band on your wrist and loosen it after exercise.
  • As always, if you experience any discomfort, loosen the band, and if it persists give your wrist a break by taking it off.

Please post here again if you are not able to make any progress.

Cheers

Thanks. I guess the only thing I can try is to loosen it even more (I already wear it 2-3 finger-widths above my wrist bone.) Still don't understand how it decides to just stop in the middle of the night.

Hi, @WendyRobin , one additional thing I should mention is that the LED/sensor array next to your skin struggles to get a pulse if the area is tattooed. This is due to the fact that it depends on the change in the colour of the layer under your skin which is inked in a tattoo. Scarring also has a similar effect.

Cheers

Thanks for the idea. No tattoos however. I will try tonight to make it very loose when I go to bed. It worked fine at the current level of tightness for 7 or 8 nights. But I need to make it work, so I'll try anything...

I am beyond frustrated with this device. I did in fact make it looser (which is counter-intuitive to me if it's supposed get a heart rate reading.) For 2 nights it recorded my sleep. I was about to declare victory on this board, but thought I'd give it another night or two. The next night it recorded no sleep at all. And then the following night (last night) it showed my sleep stopping at 2am. I assure you that I was fast asleep at 2am. What would cause it to just stop recording sleep at that point? Not even showing that I was restless. It just flat out stops. I replaced my old Flex 2 with the Inspire precisely because it's sleep tracking was getting flaky. But this one is even worse. I don't know if I should just return it, but then not sure what to get to replace it.IMG_1712.PNG

I have a similar issue. Just stops in the middle of the night, frequently. Last night abruptly at 3am. My husband has same model and his doesn’t. I am curious, is yours connected to an iPhone? Mine is. His isn’t.

Best Answer

So yes, I sync my Fitbit to an iPhone. That's how I read stats like my sleep, etc. And it continues to be flaky. Sometimes stops in the middle of the night, sometimes just doesn't track sleep at all. You say your husband doesn't have an iPhone. Do you mean he uses a different brand of smartphone? I think you have to sync the Fitbit with something.

Best Answer
Yes, my husband links to an Android phone and he doesn’t have the issues I do, using the same internet etc.

It's interesting. I had just assumed that the tracker itself was inherently flaky, either by a poor design, or the one that I got was kind of a lemon. I haven't heard that the type of smartphone makes a difference. I suppose you and your husband could test it by swapping trackers and syncing them to your different phones...

I am hoping Fitbit will investigate; seems to be a common issue.

Well I already contacted the support team 4 months ago when another moderator on this board suggested I do that. I was advised to reboot my device. Which I did, and continue to do, when I have this problem. Sometimes that fixes it for the following night or multiple nights, and sometimes it does not. And at one point I got the following message from the support people: "We just receive a response from our higher team,  we want to let you know that movement during sleep may stop recording sleep, however, you can manually edit the sleep record, to do so, please follow the instructions below:" I considered that an amazingly unhelpful message. I replied to the email saying that and no one got back to me again. The sleep tracker is supposed to show me when I have moved during sleep, not just stop working entirely. And if it's a matter of me manually editing my sleep, what is the point of that function of the tracker? So I guess I have sort of given up on your support team. Please keep in mind that someone else revived this thread, recently, not me. I am resigned to this product not functioning properly, especially after my experience with your support team.

@WendyRobin , I don't think you are alone in this problem.  Once I figured out which wrist to wear it on during sleep and how tight it needed to be, I went for a very long time (months) reliably getting good data.  I would guess that there has been some kind of update that messed things up.  For me, I've been having either the beginning of the night or the end of the night cut off.  It's not happening every night but it IS happening more than once per week.  I'm sorry to say it, but the advice from the support team really does seem to be the only thing that works.  I make a note of the time when I got to bed and wake up.  If my fitbit sleep record has cut off one of the ends of those times, I delete the record and enter the correct times to make a new record.  At that point, at least most of the time, I do have a complete record with all of the sleep stages and stats (following some syncing, maybe closing the app and opening it again, etc.).  At first it will say that no sleep score is available, but later on a sleep score does show up.  The longer awake times it shows seem to match up with my recollections, so I believe that the information is relatively credible.  I do this because I am wishing to track how much sleep I actually get during the hours that I am lying down intending to be asleep.  [So for me, that is the point of it.  Yes, I know that's sad.]

I guess what I'm saying is that the device is probably recording your sleep more or less properly (and the complete information is actually present on there), but there is some kind of glitch in the APP.

It sure would be nice if the device functioned properly.  Oh well.

I have SAME problems with my Inspire 2 that Wendy explains. As well as not recording for several days. I wear it EVERY night. I have tried everything you have listed her to do. So frustrated with this product!!!

I am so sorry this is happening to you. It's beyond frustrating. That said, I originally posted this 2 years ago and it kept failing me for a quite a while. But for some reason it has been very good at tracking my sleep for quite a while now - maybe as much as a year? I wish I could tell you what fixed it, but I cannot! It just works now. 🤔

Welcome to the community forums @darat67.

Thank you for sharing the inquiry about your Inspire 2.

There are some factors that may prevent your tracker from recording your sleep. Please make sure of the following:

  • If you slept in a position that prevented your device from getting a consistent heart-rate reading or wore it too loosely. For best results, wear your device as described in this help article.
  • If you slept for less than 1 hour for sleep patterns or less than 3 hours for sleep stages.
  • If your device’s battery is critically low.

If you haven't done so already, please try to complete a restart procedure following these steps.

In addition, please wear your device on your non-dominant hand and monitor it for the next few days. In the meantime, for the nights that don't have sleep data, you can manually log your sleep by going to the Fitbit app, tapping on the "+" icon next to the sleep tile > Add Sleep Log and entering your details.

It's nice to see you around @WendyRobin in the community and thanks for your help.

As I had said, I HAVE tried all of those things. I’ve worn it tight, regular and loose. It is not consistent on when it records and when it stops. The Insprire2 is an UNRELIABLE device! I need REAL answers and solutions!
