Inspire 2 won't sync and now won't pair

My Inspire 2 has always been difficult to sync and now it refuses to sync and refuses to pair. I've gone through the advice

  1. Turn off the Bluetooth in your phone and any other device nearby.
  2. Force quit the Fitbit app.
  3. Reboot your phone and restart your watch.
  4. Turn on the Bluetooth only on your phone and open the Fitbit app.
  5. Tap your profile picture > Set Up a Device > Sense > Replace Device.
  6. Follow the onscreen instructions and if prompted, accept to pair your watch with your phone.

Everything goes fine as far as entering the 4 digit pairing code on my phone, but it won't pair and just gives the message 'Sorry, the setup is taking longer than usual. Please be patient. We're on it! Connecting'. And it sits like that for hours. The first time I tried back on 23rd November, it worked for about a day but then unpaired itself. I can't do a factory reset on the fitbit as I have nearly a month's mileage on there which I need to take off.
This fitbit has been nothing but trouble. I never had a problem with my previous flex2 but bitterly regret asking for the Inspire2 as a gift.
Quick edit - forgot to say my phone is an android if that makes any difference.

Final edit (hopefully) for anyone who may find this post - they finally synced about half an hour after entering the 4 figure code.

This is not just you; my wife and I both had this start happening; Fitbit claimed they did everything and all we can do is buy something new, but I got my wife an Inspire 3 and it's still happening, indicating it's something wrong with their software right now.

They made me uninstall and reinstall the app, whereupon it no longer recognized my fitbit at all and I lost all of my data for the second half of yesterday (it claims I didn't get my 10 of 10, but my watch said I did). Finally got it to re-connect, but it's still touch and go.
