Inspire HR calories burned accuracy

Hello! I’m a 19 year-old female, and I weigh 185 pounds currently at 5’4. My Fitbit has been tracking my calories at way more than I ever thought I was burning since I began my weight loss journey at 246 lbs about 4 months ago.

 

When I started using my Fitbit at 246 lbs it said I was burning 5,000+ calories. Back then I was exercising (strength&cardio) & averaging 20k steps. Now that I’ve lost 60 pounds, I seem to float around 4,200 as my average caloric burn. I’ve been slacking lately but my average is 25k steps and I only walk for exercise. If I’m lazy during the day I can burn as low as 2,800 but I rarely do. It would seem to make sense, but it’s just so many calories! Is it really possible I am burning that many calories?

 

I do work a very busy job and I am always on my feet and moving about for 7-13 hours 5 days a week. However, I don’t do much exercise nowadays. When I plug my stats into health-calc.com and I got around 4,200 for my average working day, so it would seem to match.

 

But is it really true or is my Fitbit messed up? Does anyone else have this issue, or is even an issue?

Thanks for bringing this to our attention and for all the details that were shared in your post. Let me share with you that Fitbit devices combine your basal metabolic rate (BMR) —the rate at which you burn calories at rest to maintain vital body functions (including breathing, blood circulation, and heartbeat)— and your activity data to estimate your calories burned. Since your Inspire HR tracks heart rate, your heart-rate data is also included, especially to estimate calories burned during an exercise. The number you see on your Fitbit device Today stat is your total calories burned for the day.

 

Also, your BMR is based on the physical data you entered in to your Fitbit account (height, weight, sex, and age) and accounts for at least half the calories you burn in a day. Because your body burns calories even if you’re asleep or not moving, you see calories burned on your device when you wake up and will notice this number increase throughout the day.
