Inspire HR no longer auto-detects cycling

Device: Inspire HR

Synced to: iPhone 10 (app is up to date)

I commute by bicycle, about 40 minutes each way. Before a couple of weeks ago, my FitBit app reliably detected this as outdoor cycling. I went on vacation (away from my bike) and while I was there, installed the firmware upgrade. Since my return, it does not detect my bike rides.

Based on instructions I saw elsewhere on this site, I performed the following sequence:

  1. In the app, selected Exercise.
  2. Tapped the gear icon and selected Outdoor Bike.
  3. Turned off auto-recognize.
  4. Logged out of the app.
  5. Force quit the app.
  6. Shut down the phone for five minutes.
  7. Restarted the phone.
  8. Restarted the app and logged back in.
  9. Went cycling.

The app still doesn't auto-detect my rides.

Can you suggest what else I can do? Is this related to the firmware upgrade, or is the timing just a coincidence?

Thanks for any help you can give. I really do prefer my Fitbit to auto-detect my exercises. It's annoying to have to tell it I'm cycling and then only have the less-useful screen available as I commute.

Hi @evilrooster The one thing I dont see listed isbthe one most likely to fix it. Try restarting the Inspire several times and see how it goes next bike ride. Please come back if it still doesnt pick it up.

Restart your tracker

Just realised you have the Inspire HR so you could always use the outdoor bike exercise shortcut to start and stop your bike rides. That way they wouldnt be missed. However it should auto detect them, and for bike I find it easier to let mine auto detect as it is so reliable.

Hi @NellyG

Thank you for the suggestion! I restarted the FitBit a few times and went on a long bike ride on Saturday morning. Of the 115 active minutes I registered, 22 of them counted as outdoor biking.

I cycled to and from work today. Active minutes 88, none of them registered as outdoor biking. It used to be that my commute would register.

Maybe the threshold for detection has changed since the upgrade? I live in the Netherlands, and we don't necessarily cycle as hard as the device expects, maybe. That would be annoying.

That is not good enough - my Inspire recognises my bike rides every time. I suppose the level ground might make a difference, but I dont see why it should.  Id suggest you contact Support and ask them about it as it shoukd work better than that.  Fitbit Support

It's not good enough, but when I contacted Support, even with specific information about specific rides that should have shown up, they were dismissive at first, and unhelpful toward the end.

The firmware upgrade seems to have introduced a regression, and it just isn't going to be solved, apparently.

Not your fault, but I'm really not charmed by the entire experience.

I am experiencing the same issue, which began 2 weeks after I bought the Inspire HR. It is no longer auto detecting my activity, which is walking (faster than normal walk), nor my daily exercise.  Unfortunately, talking to the support people on the phone has just been a waste of time because they just read the instructions on how to set it up and ignore that I have already done this. Best Buy was gracious to replace the Fitbit for me, but the new one is doing the same thing. I feel that the fix is probably something minor, but can’t get anyone in support to help.
