Not wearing FitBit, but WAY too many calories showing!

I've had my FitBit since January, but it wasn't until Friday that I discovered it counts driving as steps. 😱😱.  We drove 6 hours and the step count was WAY more than I know I did.  I then watched it and sure enough, I watched it raise as I sat my butt in the driving car.  I took it off and made sure it was off and charging while traveling.  Today, we drove 3 hours.  We left the hotel at 10a and drove.   I walked to the car and then twice for two steps for rest areas.  It is showing 1000 calories burned (before I took it off) and 2100 calories burned as of the end of the 3 hour trip.  I'd like to know how it's getting that number!  I've been in a car with the exception of quick stops to pee.  I'm actually pretty upset by this.  I've become rather reliant on this thing and to discover it's giving false info is very disappointing.  I can only view this a limited tool for specific activities now:(  does anyone have a fix or should I just donate it to Goodwill?  Clearly, it's not accurate as-is.

The calories burned are BMR calories. Your fitbit also calculates calories burned for your BMR. You burn calories just by being alive! Even Sleeping. Fitbit includes these burned calories in it's calorie calculations, so even if you did not wear the fitbit, you'll still burn these calories.

Yes, I know it calculates even BMR.  It shows I burned over 3000 calories today and I was in the car sitting most of the day.  I wasn't even wearing it.   I took it off because when driving, it thinks I'm stepping.  So, it's not counting steps, but it thinks I'm moving and burning a lot of calories.and, in reality, am sitting on my a** for hours in a car just breathing.  On a sedentary day, I average 2000.  On a day with 6-7000 steps, I can go 2300/2400.   I did not meet that by FAR today.   But it says I've done a whopping 3200.  It is NOT correct.
