Notifications in silent mode vs. do not disturb

I recently switched from the Alta HR to the Inspire HR. I used to be able to get notifications when my phone was in silent. At this time, I can only do this if I allow it to always vibrate even when in do not disturb mode. I would like to receive messages in silent mode but not in do no disturb mode. I need my phone on silent for my job but still need to get the notifications. Please tell me this can be fixed.

Hi @Sharksfan23 when asking a question about your phone, please include the phone model. 

With android, in DND mode the phone stops sending notifications. With no notifications Fitbit will not receive any to pass on. 

Turning volume off puts the phone in DND.

I have a Samsung Galaxy s9+. This was not an issue with my Alta HR. Do not disturb means that nothing lights up, not notification light, no pop-ups but in silent, it does do that. I use do not disturb at night for sleeping.
