Why will the Inspire not automatically log sleep?

My Inspire requires me to do a Start Sleep Log every morning to record sleep time -- getting a bit annoying -- how do I set the Inspire up to do this automatically versus requiring me to do this EVERY day .....

Welcome to the Community Forums @architectscott.

Thanks for letting me know your inquiries about Fitbit Inspire. This model should track your sleep automatically. When your body is completely at rest and unmoving, your Fitbit device records that you are asleep. In this case, please restart it and wear it a night. The next morning sync your Inspire and check your sleep records on the Fitbit app.

Give it a try and keep me posted on the outcome of this.

It takes a couple of days to start working (or at least it did for me) and then it logged it automatically.  You might be confusing it by starting the sleep log in the morning 'cos you aren't asleep during the day... is there any way you can start the sleep log just as you climb into bed?  What time zone is it set to in your app?  Mine was set to America (I'm in the UK) and it worked perfectly when I changed that and set my sleep goal in the app.  You might need to change it in there and on your Fitbit and then hopefully it'll start working for you after a couple of days.

I found that it took a couple of days of it monitoring what was normal for me before the data started syncing automatically.  If you've only just bought and started wearing your Fitbit, give it 2 or 3 days before your data starts appearing in the app.

I'm also wondering if the amount of charge in the Fitbit's battery affects if it tracks your sleep being recorded too?  Mine is at half full atm and it didn't log my sleep automatically last night but it did the night before... does the battery need to be above half full for it to record your sleep maybe?  If it does, then it needs to be charged every other day instead of every 5 days like I was expecting when I first ordered it!!

Didn't log my sleep last night either, but if it does tonight then I'll know that it needs to be above 50% charge of the battery to automatically log sleep.  Really not happy if that's the case.

My inspire logged my sleep at 23% battery last night, so I don’t think that’s the case.

Oh right!  I'm guessing you haven't had the Firmware update yet?  It was sooo reliable before I installed it, but it's only tracked anything automatically when the battery has been over 50% for me since then!  Glad it's working for you right now though  🙂

It’s a new Fitbit so I think I had the update... I hope you’re able to sort it all out and it works for you!

Hi same issue my iPhone is updated as is Fitbit app but my Inspire fit bit the daily sleep section telling me how much sleep I got , interruptions to sleep , weekly chart hasn’t worked since end of September . Funny thing I used to wear 2 fit bits my inspire and Alta ( it was a joke with family and friends and me not always liking change ) , wondering if it was the Alta recording it and not the Inspire 😞 I like the way it tracked my sleep . I don’t want to be setting a sleep schedule each day ... help 🙂

Hi @AmandaGeorge @Lmic625 and @IrishLadyBug thanks for sharing the different issues with your Fitbit Inspire. I really appreciate all the efforts to make your Fitbit tracks your sleep again.

You can see some details on how to wear your Fitbit Inspire here, it will help your sleep tracking. There are a few scenarios where you might see your sleep pattern (which shows your time asleep, restless, and awake) instead of sleep stages:

  • If you slept in a position that prevented your device from getting a consistent heart-rate reading or wore it too loosely. For best results, wear your device higher on your wrist (about 2-3 finger widths above your wrist bone). The band should feel secure but not too tight.
  • If you used the Begin Sleep Now option in the Fitbit app (instead of simply wearing your device to bed). For more information on automatic sleep tracking, see How do I track my sleep?
  • If you slept for less than 3 hours.
  • If your device’s battery is critically low.

If you're still not getting your sleep information on the Fitbit App, please confirm that your Inspire HR has synced with your mobile or syncing device. You can also restart your Fitbit.

Some users have reported better sleep tracking when using the option "on clip" instead of "on wrist", you can find the instructions on how to do so in the manual page 12 and 18.

@AmandaGeorge We advise to charge your Fitbit once you've received the battery notification. The behavior of your Inspire's battery is not normal. Please let me know if this keep happening after the restart.

Please keep me posted on the resolution.

For some reason, on the Inspire device, it was set to 'on clip' but after changing it to 'on wrist' it's been working ever since.  If you're having the same issue with it not logging your sleep and you've been wearing it for more than a couple of nights, first check the time zone that it's set to and change it if necessary, wait for another couple of nights and if it still isn't tracking your sleep, change where you are wearing it (mine was 'on clip' but worked the night after I changed it, so if yours is set to 'on wrist' change it to 'on clip' to see if that works for you).  If that still doesn't log your sleep then I don't know what else to suggest, sorry!
