do I have to have mobile data enabled to use my phone's GPS with my tracker?

And, if so, how much data is it likely to use? I was hoping to use the Inspire HR so I wouldn't have to use Map My Walk, which eats up about 0.02G/hour. That plus Pandora are threatening to make me need a more expensive data plan. Today I walked and it didn't seem like the Inspire was tracking actual distance, and it was only later that I realized I didn't have mobile data turned on.
