Burning calories but I haven’t even worn my Versa

Help! I just got my FitBit yesterday. After I finished syncing it to my phone and put it on my wrist, it told me I had burned 900 calories after wearing it for two minutes. Last night, I took it off to sleep and put the device back on this morning and it immediately said I had burnt 700 calories.

Any suggestions?

Don't worry, it's working fine.

As well as tracking calories burned through activity your fitbit also tracks your BMR calories. These are the calories you burn just keeping your body alive (even when asleep). They are calculated from your profile settings for age, height, weight etc so you needn't be wearing your fitbit to get them. What you are seeing includes the total BMR calories burned since midnight.

Oh okay I see...

but the thing is I took it off at about 10:00 pm last night and only put it on at about 9:00 this morning? So are these calories an estimate of some sorts?

Not exactly. Your BMR calories are burned at a set rate per minute and that rate depends on your age, weight etc. Your activity level doesn't affect your BMR calories so it doesn't matter if you are wearing the fitbit or not.

Any calories you burn by being active are additional to your BMR calories and for many people the BMR calories form the majority of their total calories. My BMR calories add up to about 1400 per day and my total calories about 2000.

Thank you for explaining this! I changed watches for about three weeks in August (2018) and a few minutes afterwards, it showed I'd taken 43 steps yet the calories burned showing were just over 1,000. So this explains it perfectly! Thanks again!! Now I can tell my husband and his son that my watch it correct! Lol! (Now to find the simple solution of my little FitBit "icon" thingy that was in the top left-hand corner of BlackBerry KEYone - which is an Android powered device. I've had to do two factory resets seven days apart).
