Can I have an app running in the background when the Versa 2 is in sleep mode?

I am trying to have installed apps not close when the watch is in sleep mode.  Support rep said to put watch in Always on Mode.  Originally, the digital clock appeared in the lower left and the app would continue to run. After a brief time, the always on display would then change to the configured settings (Date / time / battery / stats). When this occurs, the app is no longer active when the coming out of sleep mode.  Any suggestions???
