Hi there @IronGirl57, welcome aboard to the Fitbit Community! I was reading your post that your exercise was not showing in your Fitbit Dashboard. In this case it might be related to syncing or just a delay to compile your information. I'm wondering how it goes so far? Is the issue still persisting?
If the exercise has not synced, try the steps of this article: Why won't my Fitbit device sync? But only try this is the issue continue.
The gear icon you are referring, is in the main menu of the exercise app. Once you have started the exercise you will not see the gear option, only the status of the Connected GPS.
