Fitbit Versa 2 HRM not working then bright red light that won't go out

A little more than a week ago my fitbit started acting strange with tracking my heart rate.  The problem persisted and got worse over time.  Then one day out of nowhere a bright light starts shining on the back of the watch.  Everything, except the HRM, "seemed" to be working fine though.

I finally decided I should reach out to fitbit for some assistance.  But not until I had gone through the forums for some advice.  I see a lot of people were having the same issues.  Some of them restarted the device or did factory resets and the problem went away.  Unfortunately that didn't work with my device.  I went ahead and contacted fitbit for assistance.  During that conversation I learned the fitbit pushed a new feature to the HRM that was causing my issues.  That said, the help agent had me go through a series of restarts and then eventually a factory reset.  To no avail the issue persists.  I reached out to a second fitbit help agent for assistance.  Again, to no avail and I was told that all efforts to fix my device were exhausted.  My only option was to purchase a new device with a 35% discount provided by fitbit.  Somehow it doesn't seem right to me that fitbit would push an update that pretty much broke the HRM on my device and the only remedy is to buy a new one.  Am I missing something?  Yes, my device is out of warranty.  But I was not having any issues until fitbit pushed the HRM feature/update.

Has anyone else had this issue and been able to resolve it without purchasing a new device?

Just think I was about to buy my wife one of these devices for her birthday next month.  SMH...

Thanks in advance for any assistance that can be provided.
