why did my phone app stop showing the steps and switched to calories

That depends partly on your clock face.  I don't remember the default on the Versa but some clock faces switch the stats displayed by tapping on it.

If that doesn't work, you could try switching to another.

Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.
