How to connect Alexa to phone/house smart devices

I have been trying to get some help with Fitbit support and they are absolutely NO HELP at all!  I don't understand that you ask a question and they go round and round over the stuff that doesn't make any sense.

I am trying to get help with the Versa 2 Alexa and figure out how it connects with the Alexa on my cell phone/house smart devices, etc.  The support people, both a first level person and a supervisor just keeps telling me to ask Alexa to set timer, to check weather, etc.  All those things work fine, I am trying to get it to actually connect with the REAL Alexa.

YAY!  This actually made it work.  My son bought the versa 2 on his Amazon account, by checking this I realized that even though Alexa was logged in as me on the phone, the Alexa on Versa 2 was on his account.  Thank you!!!!

I'm having the same issue as the OP and I just spent hours today trying to resolve -- on chat with Fitbit, who sent me to Amazon whom I spent forever troubleshooting with, so called Fitbit back.  After much time wasted again, the Fitbit rep finally informed me that VERSA 2 CAN NOT CONTROL SMARTHOME DEVICES LIKE PLUGS, THERMOSTATS ETC.  So according to Fitbit support, you are performing some kind of sorcery that isn't possible  😉

Big fail for Fitbit support.

From what I can gather based on the "Best Answer" and everything I've had to figure out on my own based on the WRONG answers that Fitbit customer service reps are giving me (two separate reps have told me that guaranteed, the Fitbit watch is not capable of controlling your smart devices) the Fitbit app seems to automatically register you through the same email that you use for your Fitbit account.  It does NOT allow you to sign into Alexa using the email you have your amazon Alexa account registered with.  So therefore, the Alexa app is operating independently on a completely different account and can not sync with all my other Echo devices or my Echo account.

Does anyone have any suggestions how to sign in to my Amazon account that my Alexa devices are all registered to if it is different than the account my Fitbit is registered to?  I have had my Alexa devices for years, since they first came out and I've had my Fitbit account for years too!  The only answer that Customer service has given me is that it's impossible to sing into Alexa (a 3rd party app) unless it is with the same email address that I'm registered with Fitbit, which is complete nonsense to me.  If I have a spotify account which I registered with a Hotmail account, and my Fitbit is registered with a Gmail account, I can't sync my Fitbit with my Spotify account??

Hi @Dani-3. I'm glad to see you here in the forums and I'm sorry for the delayed response.

Thanks for letting me know that you're not able to log in to your Amazon account to connect Alexa with your Versa 2. I apologize for the experience that you've had with our Support team and be sure that your feedback will be forwarded and taken seriously, as every comment shared by our members helps us to improve the services that we provide you.

About your inquiry, although you might have verified this before, please double check the following:

  • Your Versa 2 is syncing with the Fitbit app.
  • Your phone has a strong internet connection, either through WiFi or a cellular data signal.
  • You're in a country that supports this feature.
  • The location services are enabled.

If those conditions are met, please go to the Fitbit app, tap on your profile picture > Versa 2 icon > Amazon Alexa and you'll be prompted to login with Amazon. Even though your Fitbit and Amazon accounts will be linked, they work independently, that's why it's okay if both were registered with different email addresses. Once you're logged in, enable the Fitbit skills by following the steps described in this help article.

In case you're not able to login with Amazon or enable a skill, let me know if you see an error message, the smart device that you're trying to use and your phone's model. These details will help me to look into this.

It won't sync if they are 2 separate emails, and it doesn't allow you to manually login to Amazon. It has 2 distinctly separate and not connected Alexa accounts if you don't use the same address. For it to work and sync they have to be the same email account used for registering both devices.

Enabling the Fitbit skill on Alexa allows one way communication only, allowing Alexa to access data from your Fitbit. It doesn't allow your Fitbit to access your Alexa skills. You need to sign in to the Alexa app in your Fitbit app, using the same login email, in order for your Fitbit to sync up with your home devices and control them etc.

They suggested I delete my Fitbit account (along with my 4 years of data!!!!) and create a new Fitbit account, and register it using the same email I used to register my Alexa devices. Of course that is a ridiculous suggestion. Thankfully, I was able to just change the email address I registered my Fitbit with, without losing all my data, and then it automatically signed in to my Alexa devices and all was well.

Hi @Dani-3. It's good to see you again and I'm sorry for the delay.

Thanks for taking the time to review my post, as well for explaining what steps you tried to get your Versa 2 connected with Alexa in the Fitbit app. I understand your concern about not losing your data and be sure that this feedback won't go unnoticed. About the information shared in my post, it seems strange that you weren't prompted to manually log to Amazon with a different email address. I reviewed your post with the team and the Versa 2 should be able to connect with Amazon regardless if both share the same email address. I'm glad that it worked for you and if you need anything else, don't hesitate to let me know so we can work on that together.
