how can i turn off the heart rate reading?

From clock face, scroll right (swipe left) to 'Settings' and tap that. Scroll down to 'Heart Rate'; tap to to turn off or on.

Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.
