Keeps asking to turn on location

I recently switched from Surge to Versa. I have no interest in using GPS but I keep being asked over and over to turn on location services. I have to continue clicking “no thanks” - at times every few seconds. I am using iPhone. How do I stop the incessant message?

Hi @Tkiter

Location services is required by our mobile devices. I use Android and don't use GPS, but if I want to sync, I allow for location. At times, I'll turn location off and on, as do others I know. Have you tried turning it on, syncing and then turning it off?

IOS doesn't have this limitation, but yes for connected GPS to work the app needs to use location services.

Maybe go to the phone settings and block the Fitbit app from accessing location. Or turn of the notification services, which the connected GPS uses.

I've also moved your Versa related question to the Versa board. Since the problem isn't with the Ionic.

I do NOT want to use GPS or location services. The problem is I keep getting prompts asking me to turn it on and repeatedly I click “No thanks!” I want to stop the prompts repeatedly asking me - sometimes just a few seconds apart.

I am experiencing a similar dynamic. I have no interest in sharing my location, and I am quite fine with using the Fitbit without location sharing. Yet the app keeps pestering me with this request - it is at an entirely different level to any other app I have ever used; any other app I would have offloaded immediately, but I am a bit tied-in with this one.

I have turned off all notifications now, set share location to "never", rebooted phone several times, make sure I keep updating app, but the request still pops up every single time I open the app.

It is incredibly detrimental to the entire brand experience as far as I am concerned - creating some kind of nagging personality. Can someone somehow flag this to the app developers? I do not believe this is an intended user experience.

What type of phone do you have @Whateverman8756 your asking about your Fitbit app on the hardware board?

The Fitbit app, when using GPS to record a run/walk/hike will send your location to your online account. This is the only time that Fitbit will record a users location.

Please remember that enabling location services does not turn on GPS or force an app to look at a users location. All it does is unlock a service.

Exactly my experience. Very negative perception of Fitbit for allowing this nuisance to continue. This bug should be fixed as quickly as possible.

What big are you asking about @Tkiter Fitbit is simply asking for location services so that if you request gps it will have permission.

What happens if you don't enable location services for the Fitbit app.

I am not trying to turn on GPS or location services. I do not wish to use that feature. I am complaining about having to continually answer the question. Clicking “No, Thanks” numerous times per hour of use is extremely frustrating. One would think that Fitbit could fix this issue or at least decrease the frequency of the question but it appears despite many on-line complaints, Fitbit chooses not to address this flaw.

I share your frustration Everyman. Exactly the same complaint.

Hi @Rich_Laue - this seemed to be the most relevant thread open on this matter, but yeah I guess hardware is not exactly the best categorization. I use iPhone X with OS 13.2.2, always updated Fitbit app. It is a Fitbit Inspire HR.

I do not use the Fitbit for recording workouts, so no need for GPS access. Whenever I open the app it will prompt me for "Location Access & Bluetooth Sharing" even though I have Location sharing to "Never".

YES!!! This is happening to me too after the last firmware update... Running IOS 13.3.  I too do not feel the need to share my every location with Fitbit... And these  pop-ups every time I open the app, as well as displayed as Fitbit notifications are EXTREMELY ANNOYING!!!! Especially after I have clicked 'No Thanks' MULTIPLE times... Please fix this!!!!

How can I stop messages to request to share my location every time I use the app? Location already set as never - so this feels intrusive.

Hi @Hammersmith1  you can't stop the messages. Location services is required by our mobile devices. I use Android and don't use GPS, but if I want to sync, I allow for location. At times, I'll turn location off and on, as do others I know. It's not a Fitbit requirement as much as it is the operating system of our mobile devices.

@Hammersmith1 I'll assume you are an Android user. (when asking a question about your phone, it is often helpful to include the phone model), it is not asking you to share your location, Fitbit is reminding you that during a high security risk of a sync. Android, not Fitbit, now requires Location services to be enabled duringt his Sync of your tracker. Having location services enabled doves not mean the Fitbit app looks at your location. Fitbit does not care, it is you operating system that does.

Personally I don't think it was a huge risk, but if the right gamer was nearby, stirring a sync they would be able to gain access to and have complete remote control of things on your phone without you knowing. Even after the sync completed they would still be able to see everything on your phone.

It has been this way since the security hole was closed in Android version 6. We are up to version 10.

I'm not sure what has changed but recently it has been reported that location services need to be on with iOS. Think of t is as a lock on a door. Unlocking the door dkes not mean a person has to open the door.

It is not a request to share your location but a request to have access to the location services.

I do not believe it’s possible to turn off this annoying message that continually pops up.

Update:

I absolutely NEVER turn location services on. No problem syncing using iPhone. Unfortunately I keep having to repeatedly click “never” when I continually get asked if I want to turn on location services. Extremely annoying.

No, I am using iPhone and turning location services on is not a requirement to sync with iPhones. I have never turned on location services. I’m super annoyed that I keep having to say no when the question repeatedly pops up.
