Mileage inconsistencies

I have the Versa.  I have been walking the same course for 3 weeks.  I walk 2 miles out and 2 miles back. I did this for 3 weeks consistently. Always the same results. This week the distance changed for the same course: outbound it showed 2 miles before I got to the usual spot. I turned around and it showed I was under when I got back to the starting point.  Today it showed 2 miles at the same point it did the first few weeks so I turned around and walked back to start.  I expected the total mileage to be 4 miles: 2 miles out, 2 miles back... but when I got back to start it registered a full .25 miles more for the return leg.  I always walk at the same pace with the watchband on the same notch with my arms at my side. No differences. Why the sudden inconsistencies?

Where are you getting the mileage from? The watch based on your steps calculating distance based on your stride or the phone GPS? Just want to be sure.

Since the watch distance calculation is based on stride I can imagine there are many variables that can change its accuracy. A slightly longer stride, arm movement swinging differently like if you look at your phone with your watch arm holding it, pushing a pram, etc. We know Fitbit step counting is +/- a small percentage of error (mine is usually off by about 3%-4%), so I personally don’t find it surprising.

If its the phone GPS that is off that is a completely different discussion.
