When I first wore my versa for swimming it picked up every 25 mtr length and I swam 64 lengths and 2nd time counted 62 even though i had done 64 same 3rd time .... today it only counted 55 ..... i always swim 64 lengths and it takes around 49/51/53 minutes in total ..... has anyone had the same problem ?

Hey @swatton, it is great to see new faces around! If your Versa doesn't seem to be tracking your swimming laps correctly, I'd like you to take the following into consideration, 'cause these are factors that can caused inconsistencies in your swim data:

  • Stopping to rest midway across the pool
  • Resting for longer than 60 seconds after completing a pool length
  • Changing stroke type midway across the pool
  • Swimming with a kickboard or not using your hands
  • Swimming less than the minimum duration set to be auto-recognized
  • The units for the pool length setting don't match the units you use for your Fitbit settings. For example if you measure length in feet and inches, and specify a pool length in meters. For more information, see How do I update my Fitbit settings?

Give it a try and let me know how it goes!

@swatton the two best ways of tellin the Versa you have finished a lap and started another is

1  a pause of a couple of seconds at the end on the lap

2  give a good push off from the pool wall

Nope, it doesn’t work. Laps have been inaccurate with the Inspire HR, the Charge 3, and now the Versa.

I called and spoke to fitbit customer service, and finally got through to someone that told me the truth: the inaccurate swimming stats (Laps, time, and calories) is an issue ACROSS THE BOARD with the devices and they have not been able to figure it out. Their engineering has been working on it for a long time but have not got it sorted.

Nelly, Does the requirement for accuracy in counting laps by pausing at the end of a lap/length mean no flip turns?  Any way around this?  I only used it twice.  First for 1/4 mile (about 450 yards) and it was 1 lap short.  Today, swam after a hard run (did 1000 yards) and it was 5 lengths short - showing 875 yards.

@NellyG also, does placement of your phone matter?  E.g. does it help accuracy (with the lap counting) where I leave my phone.  E.g. First time I used lap counting, it was off by one length, and phone was within 12" of end of lane, near (under) the blocks, and count was 1 length off for 1/4 mile swim.  Today, I left phone on the bleachers about 20' from the lane and count was off by 5 lengths of 1/2 mile swim.  Since I'm usually able to keep track of laps/ lengths, it's not a huge problem, but it is a disappointment.  If nothing else, I'd be happy if we could edit the workout (correct lap count, etc.), but so far, that's not possible.

Hi @SteveKG  No, you can leave your phone at home if you want and it wont have any effect on the lap count. The raw data is gathered by the tracker and stored until you sync. The count is reliant on your swimming style and how you make the turns. Some people cant get a good count even with different trackers. Some (like me) get an excellent count all the time. These days the most it is ever out is one or extremely rarely 2 laps, no matter which tracker I use. I have just got better at telling the tracker when I am turning.
