I wonder if anyone can help me please.
my fit bit stopped working a week ago and after talking online they have sent me a new one and received this today.
someone did post something about either setting it up as a new device or keeping old one I can’t remember which. Whichever one they said it wouldn’t lose all what had previously been stored on there.
can anyone advise please before I try and use the new one.

I suggest deleting the old device from the app, then setting the replacement up as a new one. This way it’s a clean start. Also make sure you have the latest app on your phone while at it.
Your data is stored on their web site, so it should get updated when you set up the new watch. Emphasis on “should”.

@Elainecs , Nice to see you back. As Jlfinkels mentioned, all synced data will remain saved into your account.
You can either remove the old Versa 2 from your account or just setup the new one. Once the new device is on your account, it will automatically remove the old one, as you can only have 1 device from the same model paired to your account.
