I am having the same problem. The last time a GPS connected activity produced a map in the Fitbit app was May 16. Since then, I’ve had sometimes a map with a start point and a straight line to a random end point along the walk; or a completely blank map. I’m waiting for my Versa 2 to show “connected” before starting the exercise.
Here are screenshots to illustrate ...

Mine is a little different, maybe.  It worked for about 2 months and on the May13th It worked but on May 16th I could not connect to the GPS, so no map shows up when I finish.  I have went through the help section and tried all the tips but still no GPS connection. At first I though it was the very cloudy days, but today was clear and bright and I was biking though an open countryside with no trees or buildings.  Tracking my biking was what I got it for and it worked for about 2 months and then nothing.

So yes, your case is a little different.

I am not getting the map AFTER getting connected to GPS. My Versa 2 changes
from Connecting ... to Connected.

Tips for getting connected. Try these until you get connected.
- give it some time
- unlock iPhone and go to Fitbit app. Sync with watch.

- (If no sync, check in Bluetooth settings that your Fitbit is “Connected”
- totally quit the Fitbit app, then restart it. Wait for another sync.

- quit Fitbit app, totally shut down iPhone and then restart iPhone and
later Fitbit. Then sync again.

Once you get “Connected”, your activity can be mapped.

What I have found, is that even AFTER being connected, then starting my
bike / hike or whatever, completing the exercise and stopping and ending
it, my Fitbit app no longer shows a map. It still shows all the stats - but
no real mapping of the activity.

For example, today my exercise was a short walk 2.43 km. My map shows a
tiny curved line. When I zoom out, I found that this was about a 100 m
segment of the walk.

So it seems that my connected GPS is “disconnecting” early in the exercise.

I am happy to report that my “Connected GPS” activities are now both tracking AND producing a map. It had been working well; then stopped working for about two weeks; and now it works again!
