I've read through the thread regarding pairing to AirPods.  Is there any solution, or did I just waste my money?

I can't say, but yes Fitbit is aware that several headphones refuse to connect and they say they are looking into why this is so. 

I'm not going to comment on if you wasted money, I'm an android user and won't use windows or apple and will leave at that.
