I actively tracked on a 10,019 step walk yesterday with my Versa; when I check my route on Google Maps it added up to about 5.15 miles. For some reason, the Versa and the iOS Fitbit app radically undercounted the mileage—at 3.75. (I could see it happening as I was walking: "I know I'm a slow walker, but I'm sure I've gone past 1 mile by now...") The walk synced over to Strava, coming in originally at the recorded ~3.75 miles. Strava offers a "recalculate distance" feature which looked at the recorded route and recalculated the distance from actual GPS data, resetting the distance to the more correct ~5.15.
Here's my issues:
1. Can I get better distance tracking while active and tracking an activity? I'm starting out on a couch to 5k program, and having current, fairly accurate distance on my wrist is something I'd expect to just work. I'd like to know exactly when I finally break those 1 mile, 2 mile thresholds without needing to be exceedingly specific about where my warmups ends and my jogs begin.
2. Can I trigger a Strava-like recalculation of the distance of the recorded activity from GPS data on the Fitbit side? I'm staring at the map that's claiming the 3.75 mile distance and it's actively bothering me that it's so obviously not a real measurement.

Was your fitbit connected to phone's GPS?
If not, distance is calculated as number of steps times stride length.
See How do I measure and adjust stride length for my Fitbit device?

It was connected to the iPhone GPS.
