There are quite a few reports of a red light on the face of the Surge but I've not heard of this on the Versa.
For the Surge it means that a hardware error has been detected so it might be worth contacting customer support via: contact.fitbit.com

Sorry, I thought you were seeing the light on the face of the versa.
A red light on the back is normal. I think it is the SPO2 sensor that isn't used yet. See this thread:

I’ve read that the red light is on when the Versa is trying to get a more accurate resting heart rate in the morning. It should go off after it determines your RHR. How is your heart rate record looking in the Fitbit app?
As far as I know the SPO2 sensor is still not active so that isn’t the cause of the red light. I wish it were!
