Red sensor for blood oxygen content

I thought that I read somewhere that at sometime in the future the red sensors will be available to tell you your blood oxygen content. I presume the software has not been developed as yet. Did anyone else hear/read this? Also, will Fitbit Versa owners be notified when OS updates are available?

Yes I heard the same and basis on that I bought IONIC, the post somewhere says that Fitbit is developing a new firmware which will soon be released for IONIC, but not heard from anyone since then.

Last I heard they haven't figured out what to actually do with the data.

The red light seems to light up in the morning when I wake from sleep, so my guess is that for now it's sending data samples to fitbit for them to analyze and see what they can do with it, if anything. But I don't know.
