Can anyone clear up, what the new "Today" app (OS 3.0) can actually do on its own - and what needs syncing?
I was hoping that the new "Today" stats like automated activities and sleep tracking would be shown on the Versa immediately. But I'm getting the impression, that the watch actually needs to sync with my phone first - which is simply, what some third party dashboard apps have been doing for quite a while...

You can add water in the today app, but, yes, the sleep function requires syncing with your phone. The tracker collects the data, but is not able to interpret it. The app does that and then it is synced back to the tracker.

Is it normal, though, that manually tracked exercises don't appear in the Today app anymore until the next sync? (And even then there's a strange delay, for when it finally appears - seems it needs several syncs back and forth...) That's quite a step back!

To do so so that it can interpret them otherwise what is the meaning of today by seeing them on the phone. In a nutshell, nothing

Well... I like to track my exercise in the gym and always loved to be able to get back to it right away and compare my calories with my training buddies. Now, after the exercise I have to constrain myself from finishing it completely on the watch as I used to - because then it's gone until the next sync (and some unexplainable waiting time afterwards).
It's nice to now have automatically tracked activities included in the Today app (after syncing) - but as syncing is quite a hassle for a lot of users it's a bad idea to implement this by actually reducing the former stand-alone-functionality of the watch.

I had high hopes for the new heart rate layout, especially when seeing the new extra info for time spent in fat burn, cardio and peak. I thought this will give us real time info as we workout. That would come in handy to help me monitor my cardio workout goal. You know, do a run on the treadmill, having the convenience to see how long i spent in cardio zone without reaching for the phone. If i'm not there yet, i can continue.
but how disappointing to realize i need to sync the Versa to the phone, wait for the stats to appear in my phone's fitbit app, then resync several time before it will finally shows up in the Versa 's Today screen. That adds no value at all. All Fitbit did are cosmetic changes.

And something else I just realized:
The "Training" tile on the "Today" app now gives you "Weekly training" - which means the content is deleted on mondays... 😮 (just on the Versa - not on your phone!)
