Hi,
I decided to purchase the Fitbit Versa in a UK airport just before flying to America, the Fitbit synced once in the airport but required an update. I did not have a sufficient Internet connection and therefore couldn't update it.
Now that I have arrived, and am connected to the internet, I am attempting to update my Fitbit but it will not work and I appear to be stuck in the "make sure your versa is near by" stage.
Is it possible that my Fitbit will not update because I am in a different country to where I bought it?

Welcome to the Forums @LaurenH14! Thanks for sharing your experience with your Versa. Please keep in mind that for Fitbit Versa, you're prompted to connect your watch to your Wi-Fi network. This may be the reason you are unable to sync.
First make sure that your watch is communicating your with your App and try to set it up as a replacement device. You can check out the step by step instructions on the help article How do I set up my Fitbit device?
If you were connected to other Wi-Fi make sure to add your home Wi-Fi network. To do so, take a look at the help article How do I connect my Fitbit watch to Wi-Fi?
