Versa 2 GPS with phone inaccurate on distance

I just got my Versa 2 and went out for a walk yesterday. I used the exercise app for walking. When I finished my walk the distance traveled was off by about a mile. It said I only went 0.6mi and i know it was at least 1.5. It was connected to my phone which was with me and used the GPS I assume as I was able to see the map after of where I went. The map picture was right, but the distance travelled was not. What do I need to do so my walks are accurate in distance?
