Versa 2 JBL UA Flash earbuds won't connect

I cannot connect my Versa (original) to my JBL UA Flash earbuds.  The Versa sees my earbuds but I receive the dreaded Connection Fail screen.

I have tried all "tricks" (e.g. reset watch, reset earbuds, unpair Versa with phone).

Has anybody successfully paired these devices.
