I've been having this problem that fitbit will count thousands steps more if I am cycling. I tried already starting the exercise manually or using the auto track exercise features and in both ways fitbit won't ignore the movements. Tried restarting the device and it doesn't work. How can I be cycling and walking at the same time?

Counting steps when cycling is a normal Fitbit device behavior. Uneven surface and certain wrist motion may add extra steps. While riding on a paved surface will probably add just a few steps, then riding on a very uneven surface may significantly increase that number. Fitbit doesn't block step counting for non-step based activities (not sure about swimming).

It shouldn't count as steps if they aren't steps. It didn't count a few extra steps it counted 3.500 steps!!! When in reality I only did about 200-400. It shouldn't happen as it is sold as a smart device and over counting steps (that is the main function of the product) iscl clearly a fault.

@ltorelli from my experience with the use of competitors devices, the step counting usually is blocked for non-step based activities which is the behavior I would expect. With Fitbit is different, however, you will see here users divided into two camps. Some of them want to get those steps thinking of it as some sort of "conversion" from cycling to walking. Others see it differently and consider there should be no steps added for cycling at all. Can't please everyone and Fitbit chose not to block step counting. The thing is, the steps are not a result of any "conversion" but just a side-effect of shaky rides.

I guess it's easier to pay someone to defend the product in the community instead of making the engineers add an option to either track or not. It is a >STEP< counter. It should not count cycling. It's the same if you put up a timer and it adds seconds based on the rain outside. It is really stupid

Agree to that. It shouldn't be counted at all because these are not real steps but a mere side-effect. It's not like the cyclist's cadence is converted into steps (Fitbit doesn't even know term "cadence" for any type of activity). It's just an error caused by shakiness and since it's mostly accepted by the users then Fitbit doesn't care to correct it. My last Fitbit watch died a while ago and it eliminated a lot of frustration caused by this and similar issues.
