Versa 2 automatically goes into exercise mode and stops counting my steps

My Versa 2 automatically switches into exercise mode when I'm walking up a hill, and the steps I take during that exercise session are not counted in my total. I walked more miles than the previous day, but my steps were 4,000 less than the previous day's, because it went into exercise mode 3 times. My total steps per day are important to me. How can I shut off the auto exercise mode?

What do you mean by went into exercise mode, which exercise. 

Now if you where not exercising, what happens when you delete these exercises?

stopped counting my steps, but displayed distance, heart rate, etc
