Versa 2 distance calculation using phone GPS

Hi,

I've just purchased a Versa 2 and was under the impression that it uses the GPS on your phone to calculate distance.  However I have been getting significant differences between the distances calculated by my phone and my fitbit.  For example I ran what i know to be 5km's this morning, and my fitbit recorded it as 5.69km's.

I rang your helpline and they informed me that although the Versa 2 connects to my phone GPS, it does not use it to calculate distance.  Instead it still uses stride length and number of steps.  Is this right?

Mine the same been on bike.rode with partner both got versa mine shows 5.3 miles his shows 8 miles

I thought if it used phone GPS it calculates your mileage with that. perhaps it somehow explains the issues i am having:
