Versa 2 losing connected GPS at specific distance

A day or so ago, my Versa 2 abruptly started losing its connection to my phone GPS immediately (.03 miles) after starting a bike ride.  It has continued to do so today and I'm getting quite frustrated as a result, because losing the connection means that I have to stop, get off the bike, stop the exercise tracker, restart the exercise tracker, wait a minute for it to connect, then resume biking.  Only to have it do exactly the same thing .03 miles later.

I need advice.  I've already tried restarting the Versa 2, restarting my phone, and uninstalling the Versa 2 from my phone and reinstalling it.

Hmmm - I suspect you cover .03 miles in about 10 seconds. Which would be almost a 11:00 pace or about 5.5 mph to pull away from the curb to start your ride.

On some mobile platforms/app version combinations there have been cases where a GPS connection cannot be established or maintained if the mobile app is either in the background or the phone's screen is locked.

Try initiating a connection with the mobile app in the foreground. If it connects, lock the screen and see if the connection is lost within 10 seconds.

A couple months ago I was experiencing the 10-second drop and when I brought the app to the foreground it reconnected within 5 seconds. I could consistently get those 10/5 second combinations. I had to keep the app in the foreground with an unlocked screen. A bit of a pain until it was fixed and then it was a pain when it came back in the next release, to be fixed again.

I haven't checked my Versa 2 / iOS app version 3.30 combination yet. The issue may have come back without me noticing it.

Good luck and welcome to the boards.

Well, I tried both today and it stayed connected.  Though the Fitbit band has apparently loosened and kept losing track of my heartbeat during this latest bike ride, but that's a different issue.

I am having exactly the same issue in my bike rides wearing Versa 2. The issue started in the same time frame as mentioned by @jaimehlers , so  around early October 2020.  In my case, usually after 1 mile distance, Versa 2 starts losing GPS connection with the phone. Interestingly at the end of the ride, the ride map graph shows correctly, but distance and speed info are completely wrong (as expected).

I've read other posts in the forum with similar issue and I have tried everything already mentioned in my last 5 rides and nothing helped. Here are things that I have already tried / confirmed:

  • Fitbit app is confirmed running in background on my phone during the ride.
  • Fitbit app is confirmed allowed to access location services as ALWAYS in my phone configuration
  • Both phone and versa 2 have decent amount of battery during the ride
  • Phone is not running in low power mode
  • No other GPS app is running on the phone, but Fitbit when I am riding
  • Watch: Versa 2 - firmware Version 35.71.6.19
  • Phone: iPhone 8 - iOS 14.0.1
