Versa 2 won't track my miles when biking

On my versa2 I go to exercise then bike but it does not always track my miles. Why not? Thx

To start, I'd like to confirm if the GPS is indeed enable when you go for a ride on bike? For more information, see How do I use GPS on my Fitbit device?

On a side note, bear in mind that when you're tracking activities using SmartTrack distance won't be tracked. Please confirm that you're using the exercise app to capture real-time stats, including heart-rate data, calories burned, and elapsed time, for specific workouts.

I am using the exercise app from my Versa2.

Does my Versa 2 require that I am connected to my iphone with the FitBit app synced and connected while I am riding my bike in order to have miles tracked via GPS? Or will my Versa 2 connect to GPS without being connected to my iphone?

To capture my steps/miles correctly while riding a bike, I attach my fitbit to my shoelaces (feed band thru sev laces on top of sneaker then clasp tightly).
