Versa 3 does not support mp3 files...seriously tho?

As a musician/runner, I simply want to play custom, offline mp3 files from my watch to my Bluetooth headset, and not have to take my phone with me. My ask is really that simple.

But it seems that no, Versa 3 has altogether disowned this use case.

My question is: why?

  1. Are offline mp3s just not yet implemented?
  2. Or are they considered some kind of "copyright risk", and will never be supported?

(And, does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do? I hear rumors that Versa 2 supports this use case...does it work well? Should I downgrade?)

@jay27363   Playing personal music on a Versa 2 isn't a rumor.  It's a fact.  I did it with my Versa 2.  The "copyright risk" does limit you to DRM free music.  Playback seemed to use a lot of battery life.  I always have my phone with me, for safety reasons.  Playing music from the device isn't a deal breaker for me and I went back to playing music from my phone.  You can read more about transferring music here: How do I listen to music and podcasts on my Fitbit device?

Fitbit tends to very very hush hush about why they make these changes.  I don't think we will ever know why they took this feature away from the Versa 3 and Sense.

Hi @jay27363  - the Sense/Versa 3 doesn't support MP3 files whereas the Versa 2 does.

In all probability it is a lack of appropriate hardware/software decoder and an attempt to make the battery last longer, because it is quite heavily used already with all the other functions it has.

It's not a lack of anything.  The Ionic used to let you upload music files as well.  Fitbit does let you upload from Deezer if you pay for a premium subscription to Deezer, so I don't think the battery is the issue.  It's a commercial decision by Fitbit as I assume there is a deal with Deezer or others.  They could restore the ability to upload your own music to the fitbit device, but they choose not to do so.  But I wonder if anyone does use Deezer for this and if Fitbit ever made any money from this?  Watch out fitbit, Samsung phones let you do this!
