Versa 3 is tracking too many steps when I'm sleeping or not moving

I've had my versa 3 for a little over a year but lately it keeps randomly logging thousands of extra steps when I'm resting or asleep. I apparently did 15,000 steps today over a 15 minute period while sitting down. It's also happened several times at night when I'm asleep, it will assign over 10,000 steps to a random 15 minute interval. It's clearly a new glitch that's only come about with an update or something but it's very annoying and calls into question the accuracy of any logged steps at all.

Hi there, @cgaff. Welcome to the Community Forums. Thanks for the details provided in your post about the inconvenience with your Versa 3. I understand where your concern is coming from.

I'm wondering if you're using another app connected to your Fitbit account that will add more steps? Mobiletrack maybe? Low-power step sensors inside your phone track your steps and send the data to the Fitbit app. We recommend using MobileTrack if you forget your Fitbit device at home.

Note that adding more than one Fitbit device to your account gives you the convenience of switching between devices while still seeing a holistic view of your daily activity on your dashboard.

Fitbit devices have a finely-tuned algorithm for step counting. The algorithm is designed to look for intensity and motion patterns that are most indicative of people walking and running. When working at a desk, cooking, or performing other activities with arm movements, a device on your wrist may add some steps. When you’re doing activities that involve arm movement—such as working or cooking—you often walk a few steps in-between stationary periods as well, so the device tries to give you credit for those steps. For most customers, the number of extra steps added by arm-based movement isn’t significant when compared to your overall stats. For more information, see How does my Fitbit device calculate my daily activity?

For additional information, see Does the wrist I wear my device on affect the accuracy? and What can I do if my step count seems inaccurate?

Please note you cannot delete these extra steps. However, you can achieve the same result by negating them. For more information, see How do I add, edit, or delete Fitbit data and activities?

Hope that helps.

Hi no this does not answer my question. My account is not linked to other devices, although even if it was it would be physically impossible to complete 15,000 steps in 15 minutes, especially while simultaneously sleeping. It's definitely a bug that needs to be fixed, this issue has been picked up by multiple other members, I don't understand why it isn't being investigated.

Several other people have reported this.

Friday I woke with over 100,000 steps that @LizFitbit. These steps where showing both on the tracker, and Fitbit App.

However these steps where not added to my weekly total and I never got a badge for them. Looking back on Friday, I see that the reported steps are now correct with 15K

Mine did that this morning. I woke up with over 12,000 steps on my fitbit. Now that is definitely impossible, especially when one is asleep. I think that this issue has to be addressed and now. Is there anyway that Fitbit can have this corrected. This is the first time that it has happened to me and I hope the last.

I am not using another app and yet I woke up this morning with over 12,000 steps after having just been asleep. Again, impossible to have done that many steps. What can be done to correct this. Obviously a glitch somewhere that needs to be addressed.

Do this steps show up in your leaderboard? My steps did not, and the next day, the step count was correct, in that the morning steps no longer showed.

I'm jumping in this discussion as I have had it happen twice now. The first time was Tuesday morning at 1am while sleeping and then this morning at 4am while sleeping. 12,000+ steps each time and I got a badge for the Tuesday event so I'm expecting another today. Single versa 3, not linked to anything else. Hopefully there is a fix for this outside of having to negate the steps every time.

Mine was doing that yesterday, but today it has corrected itself.

This happens to me all frequently, maybe once a month or more for the past year & a half.  It's always a 15 minute period while I'm either sleeping or in the shower (while not wearing my Versa 3).  It also adds miles - the last one had me at 6.3 miles between 3:15 am and 3:30 am (definitely sleeping).  Seems like something they'd be eager to fix, but doesn't seem like they are interested.  I also have no other apps connected to my Versa 3.
