Versa 3 not tracking swimming distance

I swam about 1 km in a lake this morning, but my Versa 3 only tracked 0.03 km (a single point on the map). Doesn't GPS work slightly below the water surface? Is there any way to overcome this problem and properly track swimming? I saw people accurately track their swims in lakes or the ocean with other smartwatches.
