Well unbelievably, I seem to have recovered my watch and its now in use. It only took 4 full days of trying everything, and no help from fitbit.
As per GoyoM I ended up being able to do it via my windows 10 laptop. However there was an extra step needed which was to turn off the bluetooth on all devices I had previously connected the watch to (even though I had already de-paired the watch from them).
I had already tried updating via the laptop numerous times before this and it didn't work, it was only when I turned off the bluetooth on all the other devices that it worked. It took about 60 minutes to download and install.
So to me it looks like there is not only the original firmware updating via phone bug, but also one where the watch 'holds onto' all the previous devices it has connected to (even when un-paired).
Hopefully this will help someone else out there.

No, it's not only iPhones but Fitbit are only advertising that!! Its Samsung too but it's got nothing to do with your phone even though Fitbit have tried to tell me it's my phone! Its not. Its Fitbits corrupt firmware. End of.

@MFree2017. are you using the Fitbit app to setup the tracker.
The user will not be able to pair the tracker through the phones Bluetooth.

I have done everything . From a computer update .. I pad pro update . I phone update .. have Bluetooth off on other devices during the process . Each time it would not go through or had an error. It not working at all.
They are sending me a new phone supposedly but after reading other reviews on people who received new phones , they still could not update .
So who knows !! Ugh 😫 it should never be this complicated.
Best Regards ,

Who is sending you a new phone? It is definitely not your phone because your watch was working fine before the corrupt firmware tried to update! I have several emails from Fitbit support, firstly trying to blame my phone and then admitting it's a fitbit error which they are trying to fix but cannot give a date when it will be sorted
. Do not accept blame with your phone or other device. I spent a whole day doing as support suggested by downloading the firmware from my laptop which did not remove the tracking errors with the new firmware which have rendered my versa lite useless. my watch (which is nine months old!) has been shelved for the last seven days and does not track correctly so is useless since the corrupt firmware update. What I cant understand is why Fitbit are not giving users the option to download the previous firmware which was working perfectly well! Add to that my intrigue as to why
no fitbit support people are directly responding to this thread!!!

Hi everyone. I'm not sure if some of you are replying to me directly or not - this website doesn't seem to make the distinction when I view the replies. And on that point Radarmp you may want to reduce your post frequency as I feel like I am getting spammed with notifications.
Firstly, in terms of not being able to apply the update - this is not just an iphone/ios issue. I tried it on iphone, android, ipad and PC with all having the same problem.
Secondly, I also have to clarify that although I have finally successfully applied the update, I can't yet comment on whether I am having the other issues that others have reported (poor battery life, inaccurate data, etc). At this point I am just glad that the watch is even working.
Thirdly, they will only refund if you bought within 45 days (or bought in November or December). If you use their chat support and you go through there trouble shooting steps with them they will eventually say they will replace the watch, but note they could send you a factory refurbished one! And it could still have old firmware on it, so you could be back to square one!
Anyway, in terms of how I successfully updated my versa lite, it is tricky because I honestly tried so many ways and so it is hard to remember the exact steps or to know if any of the preceding ways didn't affect things. But I believe the below worked for me:
If you still have problems, repeat steps 3 - 5, but restart your laptop after 5b. You can also try doing step 5c before 5b.

Hi there.
It's good to know that you are aware.
I have been trying to download the update since last night and still only 50% completed.
I need to complete this asap as it was a present for my mother-inlaw for Christmas and I have been updating it for over 5 hours. I am heading off in a couple of hours. If this is not sorted. I will not here the last of it.

My Versa Lite is useless. The firmware will not update, and I don't even have a Windows 10 computer. What is Fitbit doing to remedy this situation?

Well, I did the factory reset because it was not working and now I can't get it to sync to the app. If I connect to the computer will it work?

Yes. See my post above on how I did that with my Windows 10 laptop.
