when I did try to reset I ended up with a red circle and x inside. it says data not cleared to syn it but nothing happens. won't go to settings help.

@barb-s welcome to our Fitbit Community! I'm happy to assist you with your Fitbit Versa Lite since it's displaying a red circle with an "X" inside. By the way, thank you for trying a reset before contacting our forums.
In order to avoid any confusion on my end, I'd like to know how the reset was performed.
In the meantime, try a regular restart as described in this help article. After this, try changing the clock face to one developed by Fitbit, not a third party clock face and see if the issue gets fixed.

have one button on l side of watch

@barb-s I'm sorry for the late response. However, regarding the red circle that your Versa showed, I was able to get in touch with our Support team and was told that they assisted you via chat.
